Dino and the Aliens 1

This cheerful, nicely designed game offers a number of reasons to recommend it. In Dino and the Aliens, you control a little green dinosaur who must navigate a maze of obstacles to destroy all the aliens on the level. The 3D graphics are colorful and well-done, and the music and sound effects offer no cause for complaint. The overhead view of the action makes it easy to see where you're headed, particularly since arrow markers mark the path. It's nice you can control the game with your mouse or whatever keyboard combo suits you, though we thought it was easier to do the former. The first three tutorial levels introduce you to all the principal characters and gameplay elements, but seasoned gamers will probably wish for an option to skip these, particularly in light of the rather short trial period. At first, Dino and the Aliens isn't particularly challenging, but as you advance deeper, things become more complicated. Though children will probably enjoy this game the most, older players looking for a lighthearted romp might find it worth a round or two.

Game- Island Wars 2

Publisher's description of Island Wars 2

From Oberon Media:
Two South Pacific islands are locked in deadly combat over supreme control of their palm trees. Hop into your biplane and bomb the enemy island while using your cannon to protect yours from invading tree snatchers.

Editor's review of Island Wars 2

You've got to have sand for brains not to enjoy this goofy yet entertaining game. Island Wars 2 echoes the theme of previous versions, with you defending your verdant palm trees against an ever-increasing barrage of attacks and falling bombs. If you survive the air balloons, the airplanes follow; if you dodge this advance, underwater missiles and even nuclear missiles are your next challenge. And although the game is fun the first time through, the lack of options and difficulty quickly render it a bit repetitive. Take on the computer or a friend as combatant, but whatever you do don't turn off the music as the game's quirky tunes add a great dimension to this tropical romp. Graphics aren't state of the art, but more reminiscent of older arcade style games. Although the registered version offers a multitude of gameplay options, the demo disables most of them. We would have liked the game to be a bit harder, at least on the very hard setting. In the end, though, it's quick to download and easy to uninstall, so arcade fans may find Island Wars 2 worth a shot.

Game- War Rock

Publisher's description of WarRock

Note:This is a very large (473MB) file and may take several hours to download via dial-up modem.

Editor's review of WarRock

WarRock is a frenetic first-person shooter MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game). You can play one of five soldiers: engineer, assault, sniper, heavy artillery, or medic (the only female). You must choose an environment before a character. There are about a dozen landscapes, and they are applied to close combat, urban ops and battle group scenarios; the last one allowing you to drive everything from motorcycles to tanks to helicopters. Without a doubt, this game should appeal to those into modern military strategy and fighting.

WarRock's Web site, where you need to register before playing, is easy to navigate and mandatory to look at so you can understand how to play. No patches and a smooth setup make for a pleasant installation experience. Unfortunately, there have been numerous user complaints that if you don't live on a continent that has one of WarRock's servers, then it won't let you connect.

It's hard to understate how quickly things happen in this game; changing your POV is difficult, so it's easy to get shot in the back. All the battles feature two teams, and you're randomly assigned when you join the game in progress. There aren't cheaters, as you might find in other MMORPGs, but there are very testy game-players who aren't shy about voting you out if you're slowing down their team's inexorable march to victory.
